Darius Mordus Honored with DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses

Nurse fills patient's final moments with compassion.

Darius Mordus, a registered nurse on the Intensive Care Unit at ChristianaCare Union Hospital, has received the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses.

When the difficult decision was made to place a patient on comfort care, Mordus took every step possible to ensure the nominator and his mother-in-law did not feel overwhelmed or alone. Every message he delivered and action he took was carried out with calm and respect.

“From the moment my mother-in-law entered the ICU, he was not only outstanding to her but to us as a family,” the nominator wrote. “His attentiveness, education, and comfort was beyond the standard of care and exceptional.”

As her condition declined, Mordus continued to treat his patient with thoughtful care and dignity. He addressed her directly during every visit and “remained in communication with her every step that took place.”

“An extremely heartbreaking experience, made bearable by the fact that our last day with her was focused on loving her and saying our goodbyes, was carried out with the utmost care,” the son-in-law wrote.
