Rebecca Dolan Receives DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses
Creative thinking and kindness define nurse’s extraordinary care
Rebecca Dolan, RN, BSN, PCCN, a nurse in the Clinical Decision Unit at ChristianaCare Union Hospital, has received the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses.
ChristianaCare DAISY Award recipients are recognized for exceeding the expectations of patients and families by demonstrating exceptional clinical skills, compassion, calm, respect and partnership.
Dolan was nominated for her outstanding patient care and dedication to patient well-being. Faced with challenges that many would consider insurmountable, she persisted to ensure her patient’s needs were met.

In one instance, a vegetarian patient requested vegetable broth — but none was available. That didn’t stop Dolan.
“Rebecca, showing remarkable initiative and understanding, went above and beyond by personally purchasing vegetable broth for the patient without their knowledge,” her nominator wrote. “This thoughtful gesture reflected Rebecca’s deep respect for the patient’s beliefs and her unwavering commitment to providing care that aligns with the patient’s wishes.”
Dolan also used her critical thinking and clinical expertise to help relieve the patient’s pain. With standard pain management options nearly exhausted, she performed a bladder scan — revealing 950 mL of retained urine as the source of the discomfort. She then performed a catheterization to alleviate the pain.
“She provided this patient with the utmost respect, treating both her physical and emotional needs with extraordinary attention and skill,” the nominator wrote.
“Rebecca’s care exemplifies the highest standards of nursing practice and is truly deserving of this recognition.”
