Vicki Torello Recognized With DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses

Changing patients’ worlds, one chapstick at a time

Victoria “Vicki” Torello, RN, CNOR, a registered nurse in endocrinology at ChristianaCare Union Hospital, has received the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses.

ChristianaCare DAISY Award recipients are nurses recognized for meeting and exceeding the needs and expectations of patients and families by displaying exceptional clinical skills, compassion, calm, respect and partnership.

Torello was nominated for her commitment to ensuring her patient was as comfortable as possible as she prepared for treatment. Her nominator’s chapped lips proved an area of pain, which Torello knew she needed to address.

“While Vicki started my IV, we chatted and laughed, which improved my mood. She genuinely listened to me,” her nominator wrote. “Then, she returned with a tube of chapstick, which was wonderful and made my world feel a bit brighter.”

Despite Torello’s actions being small, it made a world of a difference to her patient.

“She made me feel heard and comforted. This simple act of kindness significantly reduced my stress level, paving the way for a better outcome for the procedure,” her nominator wrote.

“Vicki didn’t have to go the extra mile, but she did.”
