Ross Eckbold Honored With DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses
A nurse reunites a missing patient with his family
Ross Eckbold, BSN, RN, of the Wilmington Hospital Emergency Department, has received the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses.
ChristianaCare DAISY Award recipients are nurses recognized for meeting and exceeding the needs and expectations of patients and families by displaying exceptional clinical skills, compassion, calm, respect and partnership.

Eckbold was nominated by colleague Meghan Byrne for his commitment to going above and beyond for a patient in need.
The patient, who was developmentally delayed and non-verbal, arrived in the Emergency Department “and couldn’t tell us where he was from or what his name was,” Byrne wrote. As Eckbold came onto his shift, “he was determined to figure out who this patient was.”
With some detective work, Eckbold succeeded, finding a phone number that led him to contact local authorities and to learn that the patient had been missing for several days. Thanks to these efforts, the patient was reunited with his family.
“Once the family arrived, the patient immediately had a giant smile and there were tears and hugs. The patient could not stop smiling and hugging all the nurses,” Byrne wrote.
“Without Ross and the other nurses that day, this patient might still be in the Emergency Department lost, confused, and missing from his family and his safe space,” she noted. “This award is for a nurse who goes above and beyond their job, and Ross did this exact thing.”
Byrne wrote that she looks to Eckbold as compassionate leader whom she hopes to emulate.
“I can only hope that one day I can do something as extraordinary as Ross has done,” she wrote. “His small acts truly made a difference and changed someone’s life and their families’ lives.”
