Chanelle Caple Honored With DAISY Award
Taking time for walks and word searches made all the difference with a patient
Chanelle Caple, BSN, RN, of Christiana Hospital, has received the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses.
Caple was nominated by Alison Scheidly, who also is a ChristianaCare nurse, for taking excellent care of Scheidly’s grandmother after a heart attack.
Scheidly wrote in her nomination that when her grandmother experienced a heart attack in early December 2022, she was rushed to the emergency room, then underwent a cardiac catheterization procedure.
“We were all very scared and worried throughout my grandmother’s hospitalization, but immediately felt better when we met Chanelle,” Scheidly wrote, adding that Caple took time to keep family members updated and answer all their questions.
“We were blessed that Chanelle got to care for my grandmother for a couple days during her stay because she made us feel at ease.”
Scheidly wrote that Caple “went above and beyond” in her care.
“She was patient with her and always took the time to repeat something if my grandmother didn’t hear her,” Scheidly wrote.
Caple “offered her [alternative] food options to try to get her to eat, got her set up in the chair, took her on walks and even printed her out some word searches to make her feel as ‘normal’ as possible.”
Scheidly, a nurse in the Center for Women’s & Children’s Health, wrote that she knows firsthand how challenging the job can be.
“Chanelle inspired me to be a more patient and caring nurse,” Scheidly wrote. “She carries herself with confidence and has great bedside manner. You can tell she truly loves what she does, and it makes all the difference.”
