The Parkinson Voice Project has named ChristianaCare Rehabilitation Services as one of the 149 grant recipients nationally for The SPEAK OUT!® & LOUD Crowd® grant program. The Parkinson Voice Project focuses on helping individuals with the disease improve their speech and swallowing.
Research indicates that speech and swallowing problems impact nearly 90% of people living with Parkinson’s disease. This can interfere with communication and eating, said Dale R. Gregore, M.S., CCC SLP, BCS-S, program manager of Speech Pathology at ChristianaCare.
Patients with Parkinson’s may be eligible for two specific Parkinson Voice Project speech therapy programs. Individual therapy, billed through insurance, will be offered through the SPEAK OUT!® program, which strengthens the muscles used for speaking and swallowing. The LOUD Crowd® group will be built as patients graduate from individual therapy and encourages camaraderie in a group therapy setting.
“The $1,000 grant will be used to offer additional programming so that patients can enroll free of charge in the LOUD Crowd group sessions,” said Gregore.
These programs will offer therapeutic services at ChristianaCare’s outpatient rehabilitation centers in Delaware at Glasgow, Middletown and Wilmington and in Pennsylvania at Concord Health Center, Chadds Ford.
