Ready, Set, Go! ChristianaCare 5K Run/Walk for the Lung Raises Funds for Cancer Care

On Saturday April 30, more than 400 runners and walkers took to the pathways at ChristianaCare’s Newark campus for the inaugural Friends of the Helen F. Graham Cancer Center & Research Institute 5K Run/Walk for the Lung. Runners and walkers — some wheeling scooters and strollers — hit the trail on a sunny spring day to raise funds for innovations in lung cancer care.

Funds will support the acquisition of a robotic bronchoscope. The first of its kind in Delaware, this new technology allows for more accurate and earlier detection of lung cancer. Lung cancer is responsible for one-third of all cancer deaths in Delaware.

“This groundbreaking, new tool will enable earlier and more accurate diagnosis of small and hard-to-reach nodules in the periphery of the lung,” Dr. Nevin said.

“By enabling earlier, more accurate diagnosis, this technology will improve our ability to fight lung cancer—and it will save lives.”

The Friends of the Helen F. Graham Cancer Center & Research Institute cheered runners and walkers at the inaugural 5K Run/Walk for the Lung, with the Graham Cancer Center’s Dr. Nicholas Petrelli (fourth from left) and President and CEO Dr. Janice Nevin (third from right).

Dr. Nevin thanked community members Susan and Dan Katzin, who are generously matching up to $375,000 of this year’s fundraising effort, and event sponsors Young Conaway Stargatt and Taylor; Carroll M. Carpenter; Lammot Copeland; Bart and Eileen Dalton; and Nicholas and Cathy Petrelli. Dr. Petrelli, Bank of America Endowed medical director, Helen F. Graham Cancer Center and Research Institute.

“The Graham Cancer Center is dedicated to advancing lung cancer education, prevention, early detection and treatment efforts in Delaware and the surrounding community,” Dr. Nevin said.

“Thank you for joining us as one of our caregivers, a friend of ChristianaCare, or a person who fought alongside or lost a loved one to cancer. We are grateful to you.”

Congratulations to the winners and all participants!
