Nicole Bell, BSN, RN, CCRN, of the Christiana Hospital Neuro Critical Care Unit, received the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses for August 2018.

Christiana Care DAISY Award recipients are nurses recognized for meeting and exceeding the needs and expectations of patients and families by displaying exceptional clinical skills, compassion, respect and partnership. The DAISY nomination came from a wife of a patient who describes Nicole Bell’s compassion and thorough, excellent care.

The nomination said, “My husband was helicoptered to Christiana Hospital for a brain angioplasty following a stroke caused by an embolism that traveled to his brain. We were 80 miles from home in an unfamiliar environment and I was concerned about the standard of care at a hospital unknown to me. However, the surgery went well and my husband was transferred to the Neuro Critical Care Unit where I met Nicole, who introduced herself as his day shift nurse.

“Nicole is personable, warm and kind. A truly professional RN, she applies her knowledge and training with complete confidence in her skills and abilities. Nicole’s compassion and caring attitude toward my husband with attention to every detail of his care left no doubt in my mind that he was getting top-notch care under Nicole’s watch.

“I observed Nicole throughout her shift on the unit. With all she had to do she never seemed flustered as she went from room to room caring for her patients. My husband was blessed to be one of her patients. Although he was unable to verbalize his appreciation, he mustered up a smile when Nicole came into the room with her friendly ways and humor. She always asked how I was doing and to let her know if I needed anything. Nicole’s expertise, positive attitude and keen sensitivity make her a high-caliber nurse.

“Christiana is blessed to have someone who represents the hospital so well. Nicole has a heart for nursing and a passion for the care she gives – and that’s what makes her so outstanding. Thank you, Nicole, for your excellent service.”

Established in 1999, the family of J. Patrick Barnes created the DAISY (Diseases Attacking the Immune System) Award to honor his memory with a tribute to the skillful and compassionate care he received from his nurses during his hospitalization. Today, more than 2,500 health care facilities in every state and 15 countries honor nurses with the DAISY Award.

The Professional Nurse Council at Christiana Care selects DAISY Award recipients using a blind selection process based on nominations from patients, families and all members of the Christiana Care team. All nurses — inpatient, outpatient and VNA — are eligible.
