Karen Minard honored with DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses
Karen Minard, BS, RN-BC, of Christiana Hospital’s patient care unit 5D, has received the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses for September 2016.
Christiana Care DAISY Award recipients are nurses recognized for meeting and exceeding the needs and expectations of patients and families by displaying exceptional clinical skills, compassion, respect and partnership.
The DAISY nomination came from a chronically ill patient who is also a neonatal ICU nurse. The patient says, “I understand what it is like to be a nurse and provide health care to some of the most vulnerable patients. I also understand what it is like to be a patient in my most vulnerable state.” She says she is fortunate for the exceptional care she received from all of the nursing staff during her hospital stay, and especially recognized Minard and what made her care so special:
“Karen’s care made me feel deeply considered, safe and advocated for at all times, no matter what else was going on.
“She diligently assessed me, understood my complex medical situation and responded to all of my needs.
“She went above and beyond in her efforts to listen, teach and understand to establish a positive, effective nurse-patient relationship.
“Karen’s compassion and empathy took her nursing talents to the next level.
“Karen’s proactive approach and exceptional bedside manner revolutionized my world as a patient.
“Her advocacy for delivering care in my best interests transformed my experience at Christiana Hospital and my healing process from this acute health event.
“Karen is a truly special nurse and a blessing to her patients. My family and I are extremely grateful.”
Established in 1999, the family of J. Patrick Barnes created the DAISY (Diseases Attacking the Immune System) Award to honor his memory with a tribute to the skillful and compassionate care he received from his nurses during his hospitalization. Today, more than 2,000 health care facilities in every state and 15 countries honor nurses with the DAISY Award.
The Professional Nurse Council at Christiana Care selects DAISY Award recipients using a blind selection process based on nominations from patients, families and all members of the Christiana Care team. All nurses — inpatient, outpatient and VNA — are eligible.
