Christiana Care Health System’s Dr. William S. Weintraub, the John H. Ammon Chair of Cardiology and director of Christiana Care Center for Outcomes Research, is now serving as president-elect of the American Heart Association Great Rivers Affiliate board of directors.

Dr. Weintraub is an internationally distinguished cardiologist and an expert in outcomes research. “He has been a steadfast volunteer with the Heart Association,” said Aleta Rupert, executive director, American Heart Association. “To nominate him for the president-elect position seemed like the next natural step. Dr. Weintraub’s expertise in cardiovascular diseases and his reputation in the community will only complement our existing Affiliate board.”

The AHA’s Great Rivers Affiliate includes five states: Delaware, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Ohio and Kentucky, with offices located in cities such as Newark, Philadelphia, Cleveland and Louisville.

His 2011–2012 term as president-elect began July 1. After this initial term, he will become president of the Affiliate board for the next two years, and will then become immediate past president for an additional year, fulfilling a four-year commitment.

Dr. Weintraub has performed many key roles and made significant contributions to outcomes research, cardiology and medical informatics. He has published more than 400 peer-reviewed papers and has a long-standing interest in outcomes research, epidemiology and clinical trials in cardiology.

After graduating Summa Cum Laude from Tufts, he received his M.D. from Johns Hopkins University. He trained in internal medicine at Boston University and in cardiology at Mount Sinai in New York. After a year as a research fellow, he was appointed to the faculty at the University of Pennsylvania in 1980.

Dr. Weintraub eventually joined the staff at Emory University, where he became associate professor of medicine in 1986 and was promoted to professor of medicine in 1994.

He retired from Emory in 2005, becoming professor emeritus for medicine and professor emeritus of public health. He is currently professor of medicine at Jefferson University, professor of health sciences (adjunct) at the University of Delaware as well as head of cardiology at Christiana Care Health System and director of the Christiana Care Center for Outcomes Research.

Most recently, Dr. Weintraub was the recipient of the American College of Cardiology’s 2011 Distinguished Service Award for his numerous contributions to medicine and the delivery of health care.
