Shanell Tucker Celebrated with DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses

Shanell Tucker, a registered nurse on PACU at Wilmington Hospital, has received the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses.
Tucker’s compassionate care for a new tracheostomy patient moved her colleague, Kimberly Rinehart, CNA, to nominate her for the award. The patient arrived feeling overwhelmed and depressed, and Tucker went the extra mile to understand and meet the patient’s physical and emotional needs during and after her stay on the PACU.

“She sat with the patient and encouraged her, telling her she still had so much to live for,” Rinehart said. “Shanell didn’t just treat a condition – she treated a whole person and their family.”
Tucker made sure to speak with the family to assuage their concerns. She provided helpful materials to the patient and family for discharge and encouraged them to ask as many questions as necessary, and call if they needed further assistance. The patient took her up on that offer a few days later when she called in a panic.
“True to her word, Shanell took the call, calmy reassured her, and helped her get an appointment [with her physician],” Rinehart wrote. “That kind of follow-through and compassion are special.”
Tucker’s kindness is also felt by her fellow caregivers. She encourages them to reach for the stars and pursue further education.
“She is the kind of person who offers a hand without being asked, gives advice when it’s needed most, and always provides a shoulder to lean on,” said Rinehart. “Shanell Tucker is an extraordinary nurse, colleague and friend.”
