Casi Chandler Celebrated With DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses

Casi Chandler, BSN, RN, a nurse on 4W at Wilmington Hospital, has received the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses.

One nominator described how she immediately felt surrounded by Chandler’s warmth and kindness as she and her mother arrived at the fourth floor of the hospital. They were met with grace, dignity and respect as they settled the mother into bed and began her care.

“Casi efficiently and thoroughly reviewed my mother’s medical information, ensuring no detail was overlooked,” the nominator wrote. “As the daughter of a retired nurse who now has dementia, I deeply appreciated not only the care my mother received, but also the empathy and professionalism Casi demonstrated.”

Chandler handled difficult conversations with understanding and provided much-needed reassurance that the ChristianaCare team would continue to provide excellent care, even in the daughter’s absence.

“With genuine warmth, Casi told me, ‘Someone will call you if anything happens, and I will take care of her like she’s my own mom,’” her nominator wrote. “That simple yet powerful promise gave me the peace of mind I needed to leave, knowing my mother was in capable and caring hands.

“There are certain professions where you can tell when someone was simply born to do the work, and nursing is clearly Casi’s calling. She embodies the heart and compassion that exceptional nurses bring to their role.”

A nominator wrote that Chandler was a “ray of sunshine during my stay at the hospital.” Another said, “Her interactions with me were characterized by her warmth and humor.”

The Professional Nurse Council at ChristianaCare selects DAISY Award recipients using an anonymous selection process based on nominations from patients, families and all members of the ChristianaCare team. All nurses — inpatient, outpatient and ChristianaCare HomeHealth — are eligible.
