Lindsey Safian, MSN, RN-OB, EFM, nurse manager of the Family Birthing Center (FBC) at ChristianaCare Union Hospital, has been recognized with the DAISY Leader Award for Extraordinary Nurses.

“I feel honored to have been recognized by my fellow nurses,” Safian said. “My passion is to bridge the gap between acute and community health care.

“I find that my strengths lie in compassionate patient interaction and helping patients achieve better health through resources of which they may not be aware. It is important for me include other staff members in that quest.”

Safian is the inaugural leader of the remodeled and newly named Family Birthing Center, which opened at Union Hospital in January 2024 and features larger maternity suites, upgraded technology and a warm, inviting atmosphere.

Joan Pirrung, MSN, APRN, ACNS-BC, interim president of Cecil County campus, helped to oversee the reopening of the Center and works closely with Safian. “Since Lindsey has served as a leader in the FBC,” Pirrung said, “she has led the team with as much passion as she shows when caring for patients.

“Being an expert as a bedside nurse in this specialty area provides her with keen insight on nursing workflow, allowing her to support her team in the most meaningful way.”

FBC nurse Ashlynd Parish, RN, who nominated Safian, highlighted her nurse manager’s deep dedication to her coworkers hospital-wide.

“Lindsey’s door is always open! She is the protector of our unit and is always trying to support our staff and our patients,” Parish shared.

“She is always running around the hospital helping everyone and answers her phone with no hesitation. She has an amazing attitude and is always working towards a better unit for both her staff and our community.”

Safian began working in women and children’s care for Union Hospital in 2017, transitioning into leadership in 2023. She earned her bachelor’s degree in nursing from Wilmington University in 2012 and her master’s in nursing education from Delaware State University in 2022.
