What They Did on Summer Vacation: ChristianaCare’s VolunTeens Help at Hospitals

ChristianaCare opens its doors to a new generation of teens interested in health through its Summer VolunTeen Program. Designed for students ages 14 to 18, this enriching nine-week program, which ran from June 17 to August 16, offers a unique opportunity for teens to contribute meaningfully to their community while gaining valuable skills.

“It’s a great experience, especially because I’m interested in going into the medical field,” said Kayla Brigandi, of Strath Haven High School. She learned “what it’s actually like in a hospital and a setting that I’ve never really been exposed to before.”

This summer’s 89 VolunTeens brought new perspectives and bright spirits to their roles. These young volunteers assisted with patient and administrative support tasks at ChristianaCare’s hospitals, all while learning from health care professionals.

The best parts for Sayuri Karnick, a student at MOT Charter School, were “seeing all the different health care workers, different departments and just getting experience to know this is what I want to do and where I want to work.”

“This program is a fantastic way for teens to get involved and make a real difference in our community,” said Margarita Rodriguez-Duffy, director of Volunteer Services. “They bring so much energy and fresh ideas, and in return, they pick up professional skills and important experiences that can impact their academic and career decisions.”

“I’ve always loved the lab experience a lot, but I think my favorite part is interacting with the patients themselves,” said Aashish Prashanth, a student at Wilmington Charter. “Talking about their lives and giving them something to do during their time in the hospital is enjoyable for both of us. And they give good advice.”

Participants are expected to be committed and practical, focusing on learning and growth throughout their summer, Rodriguez-Duffy said. “They gain experience, make new connections, and contribute to a team that values their enthusiasm and dedication, truly emphasizing ChristianaCare’s commitment to love and excellence.”

“It’s really fun to meet a whole different range of people all the time,” said Mack Rubano, a student at Wilmington Charter.

“My favorite part of the Summer VolunTeen Program is to watch the magical transformation of the teens from when they enter our doors in June to when they depart in August,” said Rose Wessells, manager of Volunteer Services. “At times, it has brought tears to my eyes to see the emotional and social growth in these young students as a direct result of our program.”

For teens looking to make a difference and embark on a journey of personal and professional development, VolunTeen applications and information for summer 2025 will be available here in February 2025.
