Melissa Morgan-Gouveia, M.D., Named Educator of the Year by American Academy of Home Care
'Passionate' about teaching the next generation of geriatricians
Melissa Morgan-Gouveia, M.D., director of Geriatric Education in the Department of Medicine, has been named the House Call Educator of the Year by the American Academy of Home Care Medicine (AAHCM). Morgan-Gouveia is a board-certified geriatrician in ChristianaCare’s Primary Care at Home program.
“Melissa is an educator at heart,” said Ina Li, M.D., Clinical Director of Advanced Primary and Continuing Care of Clinical Geriatrics.
“She sees a teachable moment in every home visit with a student and has a desire to teach young practitioners to look beyond the medical record and see the person, the life they’ve lived, how they are living with their disease and what can be done to add to their quality of life.”
“My passion for home care medicine is the reason I chose to become a geriatrician.” — Melissa Morgan-Gouveia, M.D.
In ChristianaCare’s Primary Care at Home program, a multidisciplinary team provides elderly patients a way to meet their medical, emotional and social needs without leaving home. In 2023, 260 patients were served in the program, which also has relationships with home health, palliative care and hospice programs to provide a seamless continuum of care.
“It is an honor to be recognized by my colleagues,” says Morgan-Gouveia. “My passion for home care medicine is the reason I chose to become a geriatrician. The homebound population is growing and it is critical to educate trainees about caring for this complex population in the home.”
The U.S. population age 65 and over grew nearly five times faster than the total population, according to the most recent U.S. Census. About one in six people in the U.S. are age 65 and over.
