Festive reduced sugar cranberry-orange sauce brings a splash of flavor and color to your holiday table. Containing only four ingredients, this gluten-free side dish is quick to assemble.

More good news: The recipe can (and should!) be prepared ahead of time. Fresh orange zest adds a brightness that makes this tangy sauce a terrific accompaniment to a special meal. Use any leftovers as a sandwich condiment — you’ll thank us later!

12 servings (about 2 tablespoons each)

3 cups fresh or frozen whole cranberries

2 tablespoons granulated Splenda or other sweetener. (Use more or less to taste.)

  1. Combine cranberries, Splenda, salt and orange juice in a medium saucepan over medium-high heat, and cook, stirring occasionally, until cranberries pop and liquid starts to reduce, about 15 minutes.
  2. Reduce heat to low, and simmer until liquid has a thick consistency, about 12 more minutes.
  3. Remove from heat, mix in orange zest, and cool completely for about 2 hours. Taste and adjust sweetness and flavoring.
