Christopher Cowan Named Among Mogul’s Top People Leaders and CHROs of 2023

Christopher Cowan, MEd, FABC, senior vice president of Human Resources at ChristianaCare, is among 100 global leaders named to the Top People Leaders and CHROs of 2023 list by Mogul, a diversity recruitment platform that helps companies attract, support and advance diverse talent. (CHRO stands for chief human resources officer.) The list highlights leaders who are making a difference and championing diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging in their workplace.
“I’m proud professionally and personally to be included on Mogul’s Top People Leaders and CHROs list because it recognizes the many ways ChristianaCare is committed to being exceptional today and even better tomorrow,” Cowan said.
“We have made equity a cornerstone of the patient and caregiver experience. To achieve that, we must have an inclusive and welcoming environment.”
Reflecting its organizational values of embracing diversity and showing respect to everyone, ChristianaCare prioritizes an inclusive environment for its employees, who are referred to as “caregivers” whether they provide direct patient care or support through other roles.
As head of Human Resources, Cowan has overseen successful efforts to increase the number of people from underrepresented groups who are hired as organizational leaders and attending physicians. The organization also has revised diversity management policies and increased opportunities for mentorship and leadership development — such as the LeadershipDNA program — to help employees continuously improve. These activities build on ChristianaCare’s commitment to being an anti-racist organization and advancing health equity in all communities it serves.
ChristianaCare’s inclusion and diversity efforts also include employee resource groups that celebrate caregivers with a shared identity or bond, such as race, military status, national origin, gender identity and more. More than 1,350 caregivers are part of these grassroots groups, which also support the community, such as volunteering at the Ronald McDonald House and placing flags at veteran cemeteries.
In recognition of these and other ongoing efforts, ChristianaCare has earned national accolades for its diversity, inclusion and belonging efforts, including more than a decade as an “LGBTQ+ Healthcare Equality Leader” and repeated spots on the Forbes list of Best Employers for Diversity and Mogul’s Top 100 Companies with Inclusive Benefits.
“At ChristianaCare, we serve our growing community every day with love and excellence. That’s only possible because of our caregivers who represent the very best of what we do. Supporting them and honoring their individual experiences and perspectives are how we create a workplace where people can truly bring their best selves to work,” Cowan said.
