Kelly Souder Honored With DAISY Award
HomeHealth nurse felt like 'a new friend' to area family
Kelly Souder, BSN, RN, of the Camden, Delaware HomeHealth office, received the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses.
Souder, a 19-year veteran and the nurse case manager for ChristianaCare HomeHealth, was nominated for the award by the wife of a patient who faced a “difficult recovery” from a broken femur.
Souder was “extremely supportive” of the patient, taking the time to get to know him as an individual. She also provided support to the patient’s primary caregiver — his wife.
“Kelly recognized the trouble I was in as the caretaker before even I realized how much help I needed,” the patient’s wife wrote in her nomination.
Souder was professional in her approach to patient care — assessing her assignment upon arrival at the patient’s home, providing medical support to her patient and checking medications regularly to ensure proper usage.
The patient’s wife also noted Souder’s superior communication skills. “Kelly made sure we knew how to reach her between visits, if needed,” the patient’s wife wrote, and “was always available to answer all questions and concerns.”
Souder provided the comfort and compassion that both the patient and his wife needed.
“We began to look forward to Kelly’s visits and this allowed the three of us to develop an incredible relationship,” the patient’s wife wrote. “We have made a new friend and we will miss Kelly when she moves on to her next assignment.”
