Vinay Maheshwari, M.D., MHCDS, Appointed Hugh R. Sharp Jr. Chair of Medicine

Vinay Maheshwari, M.D., MHCDS, has been appointed Hugh R. Sharp Jr., Chair of Medicine and chair of the Department of Medicine. He has served as vice chair of the department since 2017 and retains his role as physician executive of Acute Care for the ChristianaCare Medical Group.

In his role as chair of medicine, Dr. Maheshwari succeeds LeRoi Hicks, M.D., MPH, FACP. Dr. Hicks continues to serve as chief medical officer of the Wilmington Hospital campus and physician leader of the Value Institute.

Dr. Maheshwari is board certified in pulmonary and critical care medicine with a sole clinical focus practice in critical care medicine. He is a fellow of the American College of Chest Physicians and a member of the Society of Critical Care Medicine, and a clinical assistant professor of Medicine at the Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University.

Since joining ChristianaCare in 2007, Dr. Maheshwari has served in many roles including clinical director for Interdisciplinary Care Standardization, medical director of Respiratory Therapy, director of Medical Critical Care and clinical leader of the Medical Intensivists.

Dr. Maheshwari completed his medical education at the Medical College of Virginia at Virginia Commonwealth University. After his residency in internal medicine at the Medical College of Virginia, he completed fellowships in pulmonary, critical care and sleep medicine at the New England Medical Center at Tufts University Hospital. He holds a master’s degree in Health Care Delivery Science from Dartmouth College.
