Gillian Tilley honored with DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses

Gillian Tilley, BSN, RN, CEN, TCRN, of ChristianaCare’s Heart and Vascular Interventional Services (HVIS) Virtual Interventional Labs, received the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses in August 2020.

ChristianaCare DAISY Award recipients are nurses recognized for meeting and exceeding the needs and expectations of patients and families by displaying exceptional clinical skills, compassion, respect and partnership.

The DAISY nomination came from a fellow nurse who described  Tilley’s extraordinary knowledge, initiative and teamwork in delivering exceptional patient care and outcomes.

Her colleague wrote, “I am new to a department that receives critical patients and I was assigned as the primary RN for a patient coming to our lab for a catheter. The patient was intubated with a poor prognosis. When Gillian saw a potential complex transport, she alerted me and came to the floor to assist. She brought her advanced knowledge of intravenous and dialysis access procedures and their long-term outcomes. She consulted the vascular interventional radiologist and the patient’s physician to discuss options and determine the best course of action. Then, Gillian made that happen.

“Gillian saw an opportunity to advocate for a patient she was not treating. She took steps to facilitate interventions to better serve the patient’s needs. She spoke for him when he could not.

“Gillian clearly loves her role as a nurse and loves all of the patients in our care. She is knowledgeable enough to see the greater picture, kind enough to advocate for others, and brave enough to speak up and act for the best possible outcomes for our patients.

“She also takes care of her colleagues. Gillian has mentored me during my short time in HVIS and I am grateful for her patience and unwavering willingness to assist my progression into this field of care.  She is the kind of nurse the Daisy Award was created to honor.”

The Professional Nurse Council at ChristianaCare selects DAISY Award recipients using an anonymous selection process based on nominations from patients, families and all members of the ChristianaCare team. All nurses — inpatient, outpatient and ChristianaCare HomeHealth — are eligible.
