Megan Bastianelli Sungail, MSN, RNIII-BC

Megan Bastianelli Sungail, MSN, RNIII-BC, of Christiana Hospital’s 4D Surgical Stepdown Unit, received the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses in January 2020.

Christiana Care DAISY Award recipients are nurses recognized for meeting and exceeding the needs and expectations of patients and families by displaying exceptional clinical skills, compassion, respect and partnership.

The DAISY nomination came from a patient who described Sungail’s knowledgeable, encouraging and compassionate care for him — and for all of her patients and coworkers.

Sungail was helpful, friendly, caring and supportive of his feelings, the patient wrote in his nomination. She was extremely knowledgeable and aware of current research studies that impacted his care.

He observed Sungail as a trainer and role model. Her conversations were thorough and clear. She took time to explain and demonstrate procedures. She was encouraging and compassionate during discussions with doctors, nurses, techs and students. However, the nominator wrote, it was most obvious with patients. Her support and encouragement helped them make decisions and take the steps they needed to get better.

The international DAISY Award program honors skillful and compassionate nursing care. The Professional Nurse Council at ChristianaCare selects DAISY Award recipients using an anonymous selection process based on nominations from patients, families and all members of the ChristianaCare team. All nurses — inpatient, outpatient and VNA — are eligible.
