Christiana Care Health System is one of America’s 100 Best Hospitals for orthopaedic surgery, joint replacement, spine surgery, pulmonary care, gastrointestinal care and general surgery, according to a national study by Healthgrades. The awards encompass both Christiana Hospital and Wilmington Hospital.

Healthgrades, the leading online resource for comprehensive information about physicians and hospitals, annually evaluates hospital performance at nearly 4,500 hospitals nationwide for 32 of the most common inpatient procedures and conditions.

Jennifer Binkley, PT III, puts knee-replacement surgery patient Margaret Pamkok through her paces the day after surgery at the Center for Advanced Joint Replacement at Wilmington Hospital. Pamkok’s husband, Carl, follows them with a lounger on wheels for rolling rest stops.

“At Christiana Care, we commit to being exceptional today and even better tomorrow,” said Christiana Care President and CEO Janice E. Nevin, M.D., MPH. “This award belongs to all of our extraordinary caregivers, and it underscores our successes in delivering true value to our community.”

The achievement is part of findings released in the Healthgrades 2019 Report to the Nation. The  report demonstrates how clinical performance differs dramatically among hospitals nationally, regionally and at the local level, and the impact that this variation has on health outcomes.

Healthgrades also rated Christiana Care a Top 100 hospital for general surgery.

For example, from 2015 through 2017, patients treated at hospitals receiving the America’s 100 Best Hospitals for Joint Replacement Award have on average a 63 percent lower risk of experiencing a complication while in the hospital than if they were treated in hospitals that did not receive the award.

“Hospitals that have achieved the Healthgrades America’s 100 Best Hospitals for orthopaedic surgery, joint replacement, spine surgery, pulmonary care, gastrointestinal care and general surgery have proven their dedication to quality care and exceptional outcomes,” said Brad Bowman, M.D., chief medical officer at Healthgrades. “Consumers should consider hospital quality when navigating their care journeys, and these recognitions distinguish Christiana Care Health System in the marketplace.”

Christiana Care earlier this year received the Healthgrades America’s 100 Best Hospitals Award for a second consecutive year (2017-2018).

For its analysis, Healthgrades evaluated approximately 45 million Medicare inpatient records for almost 4,500 short-term acute care hospitals nationwide to assess hospital performance in 32 common conditions and procedures, and evaluated outcomes in appendectomy and bariatric surgery using all-payer data provided by 15 states and the District of Columbia.

Statistics are based on the Healthgrades analysis of Medicare Provider Analysis and Review data for years 2015-2017 and represent three-year estimates for Medicare patients only.

Healthgrades recognizes a hospital’s quality achievements for cohort-specific performance, specialty area performance and overall clinical quality. Individual procedure or condition cohorts are designated as 5-star (statistically significantly better than expected), 3-star (not statistically different from expected) and 1-star (statistically significantly worse than expected) categories.
