Michael Screpesi, BSN, RN, of Christiana Care’s Cardiovascular Critical Care Complex (CVCCC) received the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses for March 2017.

Christiana Care DAISY Award recipients are nurses recognized for meeting and exceeding the needs and expectations of patients and families by displaying exceptional clinical skills, compassion, respect and partnership. This DAISY nomination came from the wife of a patient who shared how Screpesi helped her through the loss of her husband:

“I met Michael in August 2016 while he was caring for my husband of 30 years. It has been six months since my husband passed away.

“As a Christiana Care employee and spouse, I observed the level of care that Michael provided for my husband while he was on a ventilator at Christiana Care. He would enter his room quietly. He spoke to us with calm and warmth. A peaceful and noble man, he showed such patience with our family.

“After three days on the ventilator, I decided to make a decision. My husband’s desire was not to live life with support from a machine.

“This was a very difficult time for my daughter and me. Having Michael by our side made our grief a little easier. Michael asked for permission to take the load off of me and spoke with my husband’s parents on my behalf. Michael did an excellent job understanding my needs and his patient’s needs.

“Shortly after Michael spoke with the family, my husband began to transition on his own. Michael rushed in and explained the process to us. He was professional and compassionate. His attention to detail and commitment to his profession was comforting, and the support we received from Michael and his colleagues made me feel proud to be part of Christiana Care Health System.

“I always reflect on how Michael’s support during this time made me a stronger person. His knowledge, experience, thoughtfulness and kindness during the process of losing a love one made it bearable to accept.

“Michael has such an impeccable high standard of care for his occupation. He has exceptional clinical skills, and reaches out to others with compassion and respect. I am forever grateful to have had Michael by my side.”

Established in 1999, the family of J. Patrick Barnes created the DAISY (Diseases Attacking the Immune System) Award to honor his memory with a tribute to the skillful and compassionate care he received from his nurses during his hospitalization. Today, more than 2,500 health care facilities in every state and 15 countries honor nurses with the DAISY Award.

The Professional Nurse Council at Christiana Care selects DAISY Award recipients using a blind selection process based on nominations from patients, families and all members of the Christiana Care team. All nurses — inpatient, outpatient and VNA — are eligible.
