Katlyn DeAngelis honored with DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses

Katlyn DeAngelis, BSN, RN, of the per diem nursing team at Christiana Care, received the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses for October 2017.

Christiana Care DAISY Award recipients are nurses recognized for meeting and exceeding the needs and expectations of patients and families by displaying exceptional clinical skills, compassion, respect and partnership.

This DAISY nomination came from a Christiana Care employee whose aunt spent time in the Transitional Surgical Unit at Christiana Hospital.

“Being on the ‘other side’ is always a different experience,” the nomination said. The employee described the “exceptional and compassionate care” that Katlyn DeAngelis provided to her aunt and her family.

“Katie kept us updated with the latest information and made sure we were a part of every discussion and decision made. She was patient, kind, professional and very dedicated. Katie’s sincerity and her work ethic made a lasting impression on me. She offered continued words of encouragement and explained what was going on using medical terminology and then broke it down for us to understand.

“Katie stayed past the end of her shift (and it was the start of her vacation) because she wanted to make sure she did everything she possibly could for my aunt and family. Even after my aunt was transferred to a higher level of care, Katie gave us her contact info and told us to feel free to reach out to her if need be.

“I am beyond grateful and appreciative of the care we received from Katie, and I cannot begin to thank her enough. Although my aunt passed away, Katie’s exceptional care and personality brought sunshine to our family during a very difficult time.”

Established in 1999, the family of J. Patrick Barnes created the DAISY (Diseases Attacking the Immune System) Award to honor his memory with a tribute to the skillful and compassionate care he received from his nurses during his hospitalization. Today, more than 2,500 health care facilities in every state and 15 countries honor nurses with the DAISY Award.

The Professional Nurse Council at Christiana Care selects DAISY Award recipients using a blind selection process based on nominations from patients, families and all members of the Christiana Care team. All nurses — inpatient, outpatient and VNA — are eligible.
