PES Team Receives DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses

For providing exceptional care to patients and their families, the Psychiatric Emergency Services (PES) team at Wilmington Hospital has received the DAISY Team Award for Extraordinary Nurses.

The DAISY Team Award recognizes teamwork and patient- and family-centered care that make a positive, measurable impact.

“I could not be prouder, or more honored, to submit the PES team for a DAISY Award,” wrote Emily Held, MBA, MSN, RN, PMH-BC, who nominated her colleagues. “I have worked alongside this group of men and women for many years and have witnessed the extraordinary work they do on a daily basis.”

The PES team is comprised of caregivers from multiple specialties, including nurses and behavioral health specialists, who provide specialized care for patients experiencing mental health emergencies.

These caregivers use their unique expertise to support patients with psychiatric and neurological conditions and those with cognitive and intellectual disabilities and to communicate effectively with them about their treatment.

PES caregivers partner to ensure the direct care and psychosocial needs of their patients are addressed safely and with kindness. Held has consistently experienced their commitment to going “above and beyond.”

Due to the unique nature of their roles and patient population, “the team manages their own supplies and bed turnovers, escorts patients, communicates with families, researches and solves complicated placement cases, advocates for patients, helps operate a 24/7 Delaware Crisis Helpline and provides trauma support,” said Held. “They also developed an internal safety committee to help identify opportunities for improved safety within their practice areas.

“My colleagues are all remarkable and I cannot think of a more deserving team for this recognition,” said Held.

The international DAISY Award program honors skillful and compassionate nursing care. The Professional Nurse Council at ChristianaCare selects DAISY Award recipients using an anonymous selection process based on nominations from patients, families and all members of the ChristianaCare team. All nurses are eligible.
