Alexi Cornelius Celebrated With DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses

Alexi Cornelius, a labor and delivery nurse at Christiana Hospital, has received the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses.

ChristianaCare DAISY Award recipients are nurses recognized for meeting and exceeding the needs and expectations of patients and families by displaying exceptional clinical skills, compassion, calm, respect and partnership.

Cornelius’ compassion and gentleness as she prepared a patient to give birth to her stillborn daughter moved the patient to nominate her for the award. She took great consideration of every word she spoke and every detail she managed during her care.

“Alexi immediately showered us with kindness, compassion and grace,” her nominator wrote. “She made us feel as comfortable as we could be and made sure to explain everything in great detail to make it as easy as possible on us.”

Understanding the magnitude of these moments for the family, Cornelius went above and beyond her role to ensure she was by their side to help her patient feel heard and that her baby was properly cared for.

“I couldn’t imagine her not being there while I gave birth to my stillborn daughter. She walked me through every step, advocated for me and my family, and poured her heart out with love to us her entire shift.

“She went above and beyond for my daughter while she changed her into her outfit and cleaned her up, made a memory box for us in her honor, and provided us with footprints and handprints for us to remember her by.”

The nominator and her family are deeply grateful to have had Cornelius as their nurse during such a difficult period of time.

“Losing our first child has proven to be the hardest thing my husband and I have ever gone through, but having Alexi as our nurse those two days was truly a godsend,” the nominator wrote.

“She was our angel, and we cannot thank her enough for everything she did for us.”

The Professional Nurse Council at ChristianaCare selects DAISY Award recipients using an anonymous selection process based on nominations from patients, families and all members of the ChristianaCare team. All nurses — inpatient, outpatient and ChristianaCare HomeHealth — are eligible.
