Union Hospital Achieves Healthgrades 2025 Patient Safety Excellence Award
Distinction places Union among top 10% of all short-term acute care hospitals

ChristianaCare’s Union Hospital has been recognized by Healthgrades as a recipient of the 2025 Patient Safety Excellence Award™. This distinction means that Union Hospital, part of ChristianaCare’s Cecil County Campus in Maryland, is among the top 10% of all short-term acute care hospitals for patient safety as evaluated by Healthgrades.

“This award belongs to all our Union Hospital caregivers. Patient safety is a critical aspect of our hospital’s quality and we focus on it every day,” said interim president of ChristianaCare Union Hospital Joan Pirrung, MSN, APRN, ACNS-BC. “We are proud to serve the people of Cecil County with high-quality, safe care they can trust.”
Patient safety is a vital component of achieving the best possible health outcomes, ensuring that complications and injuries such as accidental falls are minimized for patients during hospital stays.

“Achieving such a high level of patient safety requires the entire health care team to be highly coordinated and focused on doing the right thing, every time,” said Arsalan Sheikh, D.O., MBA, FACE, chief medical officer at the Cecil County Campus.
“The success of Union Hospital can be attributed to our exceptional caregivers following established best and evidence-based practices, validated by compliance monitoring.”

“As a 2025 Patient Safety Excellence Award recipient, Union Hospital consistently puts the well-being of their patients and staff at the forefront, setting a high standard for patient safety nationwide,” said Debra Gradick, M.D., FACEP, senior physician consultant at Healthgrades.
“We commend Union Hospital for providing consistently exceptional care while preventing serious injuries, giving patients their best chance of a seamless recovery.”
