Andrea Welch Honored With DAISY Award
Andrea (Andie) Welch, BSN, RN, of Christiana Hospital’s Unit 7E, received the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses in August.
Welch’s commitment to nursing excellence, accompanied by respect, kindness and an uplifting attitude earned her the DAISY nomination.
“I can’t express how much of an impact Andie had on my life,” the patient wrote in her nomination.
The patient’s young son was scared that something could happen to his mom during her hospital stay. Mother and son looked forward to a post-surgery visit to reassure him that she was ok. But the boy was devastated when he learned he couldn’t see his mother due to the hospital’s COVID-19 safety restrictions.
“This is where she went beyond her duties as a nurse,” the patient wrote.
Welch saw what happened and arranged for a quick, quiet visit at a safe location.
When the boy saw his mom, he teared up, ran to her and—surgery forgotten—squeezed her tight. The meeting provided the comfort both needed.
“Thank you from the bottom of our hearts!”
The Professional Nurse Council at ChristianaCare selects DAISY Award recipients using an anonymous process based on nominations from patients, families and all members of the ChristianaCare team. All nurses — inpatient, outpatient and ChristianaCare HomeHealth — are eligible.
