Matthew Powell, M.D., Named Chair of Anesthesiology

Matthew Powell, M.D., has been appointed chair of the Department of Anesthesiology at ChristianaCare. Dr. Powell will oversee clinical operations and strategic planning for all anesthesia services, credentialing, privileging and education.

Since joining ChristianaCare’s Medical-Dental Staff as a member of Anesthesia Services, P.A., in 2005, Dr. Powell has served in several clinical and administrative roles. Dr. Powell was named medical director of the Wilmington Campus for the Department of Anesthesiology in 2017, and has served as the medical director of clinical operations for Perioperative Services. He was appointed vice chair of the Department of Anesthesiology in 2018.

Dr. Powell has been active on numerous committees at ChristianaCare focused on trauma, neurosciences and substance use disorder.

He serves as the chair for the Enhanced Recovery After Surgery Committee and served as the inaugural chair of the Perioperative Pain Management Committee. He also established and continues to manage the Delaware OPEN program that focuses on optimal postoperative opioid prescribing in our community.

Dr. Powell completed his residency at the University of South Florida in 2005. He completed the Health Management Academy Physician Leadership Program in 2017 and the ChristianaCare Healthcare Leadership Certification of the Alfred Lerner College of Business and Economics in 2018.

He reports to Kert Anzilotti, M.D., MBA, chief medical officer for Acute Care.
