Joy Coleman honored with DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses
Joy Coleman, BSN, RN, CAPA, of the Roxana Cannon Arsht Surgicenter on the Wilmington Hospital campus, received the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses for November 2018.
Christiana Care DAISY Award recipients are nurses recognized for meeting and exceeding the needs and expectations of patients and families by displaying exceptional clinical skills, compassion, respect and partnership.
The DAISY nomination came from a mom (and a nurse) who describes how Joy Coleman shepherded her through a very difficult day and restored her confidence in others to help care for her child.
The nomination said, “Joy was the charge nurse the day of my 4-year-old son’s surgery. After losing our first son to sepsis two days after he was born, I no longer trusted anyone, especially when it came to my children … until I met Joy.
“I was extremely nervous and scared when we arrived at the surgicenter. Then Joy greeted us. She was genuinely nice and our son took to her immediately. She reassured me with her words and her body language. As I watched her interact with my son, I trusted that she would make sure he was OK when I was not there.
“After my son went back for surgery, Joy walked me out and I couldn’t hold back the tears. She stopped and hugged me. I told her how this little boy saved my life after I lost his brother, which made it so hard for me to trust that things would be OK. Joy hugged me again and asked if we could say a prayer. She prayed for Christian and for me, and as I listened to her I felt a sense of relief and knew everything was going to be alright.
“The entire care team was amazing, but Joy is the first person I truly felt I could trust. I could not be happier with the care given to my son. Thank you.”
Established in 1999, the family of J. Patrick Barnes created the DAISY (Diseases Attacking the Immune System) Award to honor his memory with a tribute to the skillful and compassionate care he received from his nurses during his hospitalization. Today, more than 2,500 health care facilities in every state and 15 countries honor nurses with the DAISY Award.
The Professional Nurse Council at Christiana Care selects DAISY Award recipients using a blind selection process based on nominations from patients, families and all members of the Christiana Care team. All nurses — inpatient, outpatient and VNA — are eligible.
