Brightening smiles at the Sunday Breakfast Mission

Christiana Care partnered with the Sunday Breakfast Mission at an annual Back-to-School Rally to provide free dental screenings to children, Aug. 18 in Wilmington.

Kids at the rally received school supplies, backpacks and health information to help them prepare for the new school year. They also received a free dental screening — a special treat for many of the children who rarely receive dental care. Additionally, Christiana Care Blood Pressure Ambassadors completed more than 60 free blood-pressure screenings for attendees.

“Working in partnership, the Christiana Care dental office and Gentle Touch Smiles for Kids have tracked 16 children who received follow-up dental care from this screening event,” said Christiana Care social worker Linda Brennan-Jones, LCSW. “Five of the children were considered to have urgent dental needs.”

Residents from Christiana Care, and hygienists and volunteers from other organizations including Gentle Touch Smiles, Westside Health and All About Smiles, performed dental screenings and provided support to the 103 children served at the Sunday Breakfast Mission.
