Kim Balogun honored with DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses

Kim Balogun, M.Ed., BSN, RN, of Wilmington Hospital Emergency Department, received the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses for July 2018.

Christiana Care DAISY Award recipients are nurses recognized for meeting and exceeding the needs and expectations of patients and families by displaying exceptional clinical skills, compassion, respect and partnership. The DAISY nomination came from a nurse who describes Kim Balogun’s quick actions that helped save the life of a patient.

The nomination said, “I was charge nurse on the evening shift when I received a call from the triage clerk that there was a patient in the lobby needing CPR. When Dr. Osborne and I responded, we found Kim Balogun outside in the rain performing CPR on a young woman. Kim had pulled her from the car, lowered her to the ground and immediately began one-person CPR. Kim continued chest compressions en route to the emergency department by way of straddling the patient on the stretcher. After rounds of life saving medications and continued effective CPR, the patient was transferred to the ICU for continued expert care.

“I honestly believe that, as first responder to the scene, Kim’s rapid recognition of cardiac arrest and prompt CPR helped save this patient’s life. Our manager, Sarah Flanders, MSN, RN-BC, CEN, summed up Kim’s actions and care, ‘Kim, you are a wonderful ED nurse, but really a wonderful humanitarian. Some may have waited for help, a stretcher, to get out of the rain.

“You dove right in, realizing that every second of delay of CPR decreased the chance of survival. Please take pride in this … realize your gifts and how powerful you are! We are grateful to have you on our team!’”

Established in 1999, the family of J. Patrick Barnes created the DAISY (Diseases Attacking the Immune System) Award to honor his memory with a tribute to the skillful and compassionate care he received from his nurses during his hospitalization. Today, more than 2,500 health care facilities in every state and 15 countries honor nurses with the DAISY Award.

The Professional Nurse Council at Christiana Care selects DAISY Award recipients using a blind selection process based on nominations from patients, families and all members of the Christiana Care team. All nurses — inpatient, outpatient and VNA — are eligible.
