Twenty-three students from the First State School traveled to the National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, D.C. in October with financial support from Don and Delores Blakey of Dover. Mrs. Blakey, a retired teacher from Caesar Rodney School District, first became involved with the First State School when English teacher Karen Rabik invited her to share her talents as an actress portraying Harriett Tubman, the American abolitionist, humanitarian, and scout and spy for the United States Army during the American Civil War. After learning that the students were interested in a field trip to the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History & Culture, she and her husband generously offered to fund the trip.
