Phil Scott honored with DAISY Award

Wilmington Hospital ICU’s Phil Scott, RN II, NRP, has received the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses for April. Scott joined Christina Care in 2012 as a critical care nurse with 21 years of experience as a trooper and flight medic with the Maryland State Police.

Christiana Care DAISY Award recipients are nurses recognized for meeting and exceeding the needs and expectations of patients and families by displaying exceptional clinical skills, compassion, respect and partnership.

This DAISY nomination came from a heartbroken mother who took the time to share her family’s heartfelt thanks for Scott’s comfort and support as they experienced the end of life of their son:

“On Feb. 2 we received the phone call that every parent fears. There was an incident, and our son was in critical condition. We caught the first available flight from Florida and were at the hospital as quickly as possible. Our son was in ICU on a ventilator.

“Phil Scott came on duty shortly after we arrived. He gave our son the best care possible. The compassionate care that he gave the rest of the family was more than we ever could imagine.

“He explained what he was doing for Jack. The equipment and entire situation were overwhelming to say the least. Over the next three days he cared for the family as much as he did our son.

“On Friday morning, when we arrived at ICU, Phil was there on his day off to see how we were doing. Our son was officially declared brain dead that morning, and the process for donation of his organs would begin.

“Phil was a godsend. He comforted us at such a difficult time. We will be forever grateful for everything he did for Jack and the entire family.”

Established in 1999, the family of J. Patrick Barnes created the DAISY (Diseases Attacking the Immune System) Award to honor his memory with a tribute to the skillful and compassionate care he received from his nurses during his hospitalization. Today, more than 2,000 health care facilities in every state and 15 countries honor nurses with the DAISY Award.

The Professional Nurse Council at Christiana Care selects DAISY Award recipients using a blind selection process based on nominations from patients, families and all members of the Christiana Care team. All nurses — inpatient, outpatient and VNA — are eligible.
