Angela Goodale, BSN, RN, CCRN, of the Surgical Critical Care Complex at Christiana Hospital, has received the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses for December 2016.

Christiana Care DAISY Award recipients are nurses recognized for meeting and exceeding the needs and expectations of patients and families by displaying exceptional clinical skills, compassion, respect and partnership.

The DAISY nomination comes from the aunt of a patient who spent several days unconscious in the intensive care unit after a vehicular accident. “Angela didn’t just make a difference in our lives,” she said. “She made an impression in our hearts and minds.

“When my sister and I met Angela on the unit, her personality was out of this world. She was patient and knowledgeable. She was always ready to explain anything my sister asked about, even if she asked 100 times. She shared sadness with us.

“Angela was a great part of my nephew’s healing and recovery. My sister stayed by his side as much as she was allowed, and I visited in the evenings. When Angela was his nurse, I could see that he was well taken care of and his brain had more activity. She was the nurse that got him to respond for the first time. I can still remember that day.

“Angela was positive and never said a negative thing. She gave us great hope, and we were so happy to share our happiness with her, including a big hug when he was doing well on her last day of the week. We were thrilled and thankful when we got the call that he was being moved to a stepdown unit. But we knew we would miss Angela and her care.

“This was a terrible way to meet a great person. But we are so very glad we got the chance to meet Angela. In the four days my family and I shared with Angela Goodale, we were met with kindness and personal empathy that I had never before encountered.

“Angela will always be in our hearts and in our minds. We thank her for everything!”

Established in 1999, the family of J. Patrick Barnes created the DAISY (Diseases Attacking the Immune System) Award to honor his memory with a tribute to the skillful and compassionate care he received from his nurses during his hospitalization. Today, more than 2,000 health care facilities in every state and 15 countries honor nurses with the DAISY Award.

The Professional Nurse Council at Christiana Care selects DAISY Award recipients using a blind selection process based on nominations from patients, families and all members of the Christiana Care team. All nurses — inpatient, outpatient and VNA — are eligible.
