     B E S T P R A C T I C E R E V I E W : Medication Cart Locking . Q. Why is it important to lock a medication cart? Q. When should the cart be locked?
  A. Medications and biologicals must be secured to prevent diversion and unauthorized individuals from obtaining medication. When a medication cart is properly locked, the medication drawers cannot be accessed and the contents are secured. A code must be entered to unlock and access the cart contents.
Q. What do I do if my medication cart is not locking?
A. Check the back of the cart. The medication cart locking mechanism is disabled when a plug on the back of the cart is unplugged. For medication security, the plug must remain plugged in and the cart locked when not in use.
If you discover a medication cart that does not lock and you have confirmed the plug on the back of the cart is properly plugged in, please contact IT Customer Service at 302-733-EMER.
A. To maintain medication security, medication carts should be locked when not in use. The medication carts will automatically lock after three minutes.
• When drawers are closed and the cart times out, the cart will lock and not alarm
• When drawers are open and the cart times out, cart will not lock and will alarm. 
