Health Tips Especially for the Guys
LOTS OF MEN THINK OF THEMSELVES AS GUYS YOU CAN COUNT ON. THEY WORK HARD, PLAY HARD AND KEEP THEIR FAMILIES SAFE.
But when it comes to looking after their health, research shows that men are far less likely than women to go the doctor or get preventive screenings.
IT TAKES TWO
What inspires a man to make an appointment with a health care provider? Often, it’s a loved one in his life: a spouse, significant other, parent, child or friend. In a study by the American Academy of Family Physicians, 80% of men with a spouse or significant other said their better half played a role in getting them to go to a health care provider.
“BUT YOU SAID YOU WOULD!”
Does nagging work? No. The study also suggests that expressing concern is more effective than nagging. Let men know that when they take care of themselves, they are expressing respect and affection for the people who care about them.
TAKE CHARGE
Whatever the motivation, be proactive about your health. Don’t wait until you are in severe pain or are extremely ill to make an appointment. Take care of minor problems before they become major issues.
TOOLS IN THE TOOLBOX
• Men or their significant other should make an appointment with their primary care provider to keep up to date on checkups and screenings.
• Depending on a man’s age and medical history, his health care provider may recommend screenings for hypertension, type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, colon cancer, prostate cancer, depression and hepatitis C. If you are young and healthy, a blood pressure reading could be all you need.
• Preventive measures might include immunizations for flu, shingles, tetanus, pneumonia and other illnesses. 
