| Women & Children’s Health Big Latch-On event celebrates World Breastfeeding Week
More than 150 families turned out Saturday, Aug. 4, to Christiana Care's “Big Latch-On,” a celebration recognizing World Breastfeeding Week.
“The health benefits of breastfeeding to both mother and baby are well-documented,” said Mona Liza Hamlin, MSN, RN, IBCLC, nurse manager for Parent Education and Lactation Services. “We want to show our commitment to providing optimal care to our mothers, no matter how they choose to feed their baby.”
Around the globe, nearly 60,000 breastfeeding moms attended 778 “Latch-On” events in 28 countries on Aug. 3, 4 and 5.
Christiana’s Care’s event included a fashion show with stylish nursing wear for moms, health education for families and fun activities for the kids, including face-painting and entertainment by local children's entertainer Jungle John.
For the good health of babies and their mothers, Christiana Care encourages new mothers to breastfeed whenever possible. Breast milk is considered the perfect food for infants, because it contains antibodies to protect them
from illness, is easily digested and changes as the baby grows
to provide the right nutrition for each stage of development. Breastfeeding also supports bonding between mother and baby.
Christiana Care offers a support network to make breastfeeding an easy, enjoyable experience for mothers and babies. Christiana Care’s commitment to the highest level of care
for infant feeding and mother-baby bonding
has earned a Baby-Friendly designation by the Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative — a global program of the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF). 
