Christiana Care Medical Aid Units bring expert care available
daily at Christiana, Newark, Smyrna, Glasgow and Middletown.
With the reopening of a newly remodeled Medical Aid Unit at the HealthCare Center at Christiana, across the street from Christiana Hospital, five Christiana Care Medical Aid Units are now available for convenient care, seven days a week, in Kent and New Castle Counties.
Since opening Jan. 8 the new facility has been bustling with patients and families receiving Christiana Care’s hallmark respectful, expert care.
“We are pleased with the look and design of the new facility, and we like to think of all our Medical Aid Units as offering the right care to people when they need it,” said Nicole Harris, BS, RT, administrative director of the Medical Aid Units.
When is a Medical Aid Unit the right place to seek care?
Medical Aid Units treat injuries or illnesses that are not extremely serious or life- threatening but require care within a few hours or the same day. For life-threatening concerns such as strokes and heart attacks, call 911 or go directly to the Emergency Department.
For example, a young woman who experiences a game-day sports injury on a Saturday is a typical candidate for care at a Medical Aid Unit.
“She is in pain and needs to see a
clinician; yet she’s not suffering from a life-threatening condition. That young woman would be an ideal candidate for our Medical Aid Units because we have the ability see her quickly, arrange for X-rays and determine the extent of the sprain or fracture,” said Joanne Brice, M.D., medical director for consumer initiatives. “But she doesn’t really need the life-saving services of an Emergency Department.”
Medical Aid Units also give people the chance to quickly consult with a medical professional if they do not have a primary care provider or if it’s not possible to see that provider. Sore throats and coughs, eye and ear problems, sports injuries, minor burns and flu-like symptoms are some of the reasons that patients come to the units.
Most of the Medical Aid Units are open seven days a week from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. No appointment is necessary. Express Check- In, available on the Christiana Care website, enables people to see current wait times and reserve their spot in line.
“Typically, there are shorter wait times than in the Emergency Department, with our providers offering high-quality, safe care to patients of any age,” said Sharon Kurfuerst, Ed.D., OTR/L, FAOTA, FACHE, FABC, chief operating officer, Christiana Care Health Services. “Folks who use Express Check-In really love its convenience, and it helps to create a more pleasant experience for staff and patients alike.” 
