BEST PRACTICE REVIEW: OxygenConnectors . Q. Why have we changed to metal oxygen connectors? Q. Are the new metal oxygen connectors MRI safe?
A. The new metal oxygen connectors are labeled for multi-patient A. No. The new oxygen connectors are not MRI safe. MRI must
use and can be disinfected after patient use. The green plastic oxygen connectors are labeled as single use devices and cannot be reused.
Q. Can I reuse the green plastic oxygen connector if I clean it with a PDI wipe?
A. No. The green oxygen connectors are for single patient use and cannot be properly disinfected.
Q. How do I disinfect the metal oxygen connector?
A. The metal oxygen connector will remain in the patient room and will be cleaned by Environmental Services when the room is turned over. For the outpatient offices that use the metal oxygen connector, staff will need to disinfect the oxygen connector after patient use before returning oxygen cylinder to storage area.

Q. What should I do with the green plastic oxygen connectors that are currently in my department?
A. Credit will be issued for unused oxygen connectors. Inpatient departments can place unused green oxygen connectors in the return bins, along with a completed credit form. Offices located offsite can return unused plastic oxygen connectors through their usual return process.
