 The Christiana Care Way |
Now more than ever: Building on success with
By Janice E. Nevin, M.D., MPH, president and CEO
Since we introduced our first three-year strategic plan in 2015, we have come far in our journey to transform from a health system into an organization that truly impacts health. Our successes are the product of your commitment to serving our neighbors as respectful, expert partners in their health.
  a strategy for the future
Aswe look ahead with a new strategic plan for
FY2018-21, I deeply thank
you for your efforts, which have made a measureable difference in the
lives of those we are privileged to serve.
We have incredible successes to celebrate. We have achieved top honors in quality and patient safety, ranked this year in the top 2 percent of hospitals nationwide for superior clinical performance by HealthGrades. We are top-rated by U.S. News & World Report and CareChex, and we achieved the highest ranking — five stars — in CMS Hospital Compare scores.
We have made tremendous progress in population health and value-based pay- ment. Our unique, data-powered, Eisenberg Award-winning Carelink CareNow care coordination platform is helping more than 104,000 people in our community achieve better health while reducing the overall cost of their care.
We engaged our Extraordinary People throughout our organization to define the values and behaviors that help us deliver
on the promise of The Christiana Care Way. Today, our values and behaviors inspire our work, support an Exceptional Experience and serve as a hallmark of what truly makes us special as an organization. We serve together, guided by our values, Excellence and Love.
We have maintained strong Organizational Vitality. Our Wilmington campus contin- ues to grow as a vital health care resource to the community, most recently achieving Level III trauma designation and bringing more outpatient services into the Gateway Building. Our Christiana campus has
expanded with new employee and visitor parking and the new Center for Women & Children’s Health under construction. And we continue to support the needs of our communities through expanding outpa- tient and home-care services.
As we celebrate what we have accom- plished, I am even more energized by our work ahead. We begin, as always, with you
E— our caregivers.
veryone who works at Christiana Care is a caregiver, whether
you care for patients directly
or support that care with other
expertise. A focus this year is to develop a plan to accelerate improvements in patient and caregiver experience, and determine ways to measure improvement. Over the next three years, we are committed to achieving top performance for caregiver engagement and well-being, and achieving exceptional experience across the care continuum. We will continue to support your personal wellness and work-life balance, understanding that a healthy community begins with us.
An Exceptional Experience begins with you and grows from anticipating the needs of everyone we serve — and then meeting those needs through personalized commu- nication and radically convenient inter- actions. Our strategy includes achieving 24/7/365 access to primary care, access to specialty care within one week and conve- nient self-service options for our patients. And we’re going to increase transparency, making clear, accurate cost and quality information more easily available so the people we serve can make well-informed decisions.
To create healthier communities, our Optimal Health goals center on high reliability and relationship-centered approaches. We will continue to reduce
and eliminate preventable patient
harm. We will reduce health disparities, particularly in diabetes, hypertension
and perinatal care. And we will advance care standardization, particularly in five conditions: congestive heart failure, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, diabetes, hypertension and substance use disorder.
In all of these areas, our goal is ensuring the right care for every patient, at the right time and place, with the right people involved.
Another exciting area of focus for us is primary care. Care at home and in the com- munity is increasingly the way of the future. We’re not waiting for the future to happen
— we’re creating it. We are on a mission to reimagine primary care services with new, innovative models that meet the changing needs and preferences of the people we serve.
To meet our aims, we will sustain financial stability while staying true to our mission. Our Organizational Vitality goals include increasing revenue earned through new value-based payment approaches, develop- ing new and expanded profitable revenue streams, and reducing waste.
These are just the broad brush strokes of our strategy, and I encourage all of our caregivers to learn more by exploring the Advancing The Way website and discussing with your leaders. I am more optimistic than ever about what we can achieve as
we serve together, guided by our values, Excellence and Love. Thank you for all that you do — for everyone we have the privilege to serve. 
