Community Baby Shower celebrates, educates families
Christiana Care and community partners provided education and connection to services to parents, grandparents and families at a Community Baby Shower at Wilmington Hospital.
To help Delaware families give the best start to their newborns, Christiana Care Health System hosted a Community Baby Shower in May at the Gateway Conference Center, Wilmington Hospital.
The special event, in partnership with the Delaware Division of Public Health, featured education on safe sleep and developmental milestones, along with baby gifts and drawings for prizes.
Christiana Care health ambassadors helped to connect new parents and pregnant women with health care services and other resources, sharing support and encouragement at information stations on nutrition, safety,
breastfeeding and other family-focused topics, so babies and their parents can thrive.
The Health Ambassador Program, funded by the Delaware Division of Public Health, has hosted community baby showers in the city of Wilmington since 2013.
“We developed the Health Ambassador Program as a community-based intervention to promote health before, during and after pregnancy," said Carla Aponte, MS, program manager. “Our objective is to connect pregnant women and families to health care, social services and education to increase their health and well-being.” 
Delaware Subaru supports healthy beginnings for babies with gift to Christiana Care
Christiana Care Health System Trustee Michael Uffner and his team at Delaware Subaru delivered a generous $16,000 gift to Christiana Care with proceeds from his dealership’s “Share the Love” campaign to support the special needs of babies in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and their parents.
“Delaware Subaru is so pleased to support the excellent, high- quality care that Christiana Care provides for babies and their families,” said Uffner, the president, chairman and CEO at Delaware Subaru and Auto Team Delaware. “It’s a special way we can contribute to the future of our community.”
The gift marks the third year that Uffner and his team have chosen Christiana Care as a recipient for “Share the Love,” which designates funds from every Subaru sold between November and January to select nonprofits.
“We are grateful for the generosity of Delaware Subaru in supporting the needs of Delaware’s youngest patients and their families during such a critical time in their lives,” said David A. Paul, M.D., chair of the Department of Pediatrics at Christiana Care and clinical leader of the Women and Children’s Service Line.
Christiana Hospital is the only delivering hospital in the state to offer a Level III NICU. The unit, fully equipped with advanced technology and expert neonatal specialists, averages 1,200 admissions a
year. Subaru’s philanthropy comes as Christiana Care enhances its Women and Children’s services and builds a state-of-the-art facility at Christiana Hospital, opening in 2020. 
