• Devices used during medical dental diagnostic or surgical procedures to temporarily immobilize or or limit mobility during the procedure procedure or post-procedure care process • IV IV arm boards used to stabilize an IV IV line NOT tied down or attached to a a a bed • Devices that permit patients to achieve maxium normative bodily functioning (e g g braces orthopaedic appliances) • Medical protective devices used for the the safety of the the patient (e g helmets splints padded siderail used for seizure precautions) • Siderails raised on stretchers in the Emergency Department or or during transport (these are safety intervention) • Stroller safety belts crib crib siderails crib crib covers used for safety Q Are handcuffs used by law enforcement considered restraints?
A No These devices are used by non-hospital personnel for custody detention and and public safety reasons Handcuffs do not not need restraint orders and should not not be documented as restraints 
• A restraint is any manual method physical or mechanical device material or or equipment that immobilizes or or reduces the ability of a a a a patient to move his or or her arms legs body or or head freely • A restraint can also be a a a a a a drug or medication which is not a a a a a a standard treatment or or dosage for the patient’s condition that is used as a a a a a a restriction to manage the patient’s behavior or or restrict the patient’s freedom of movement What is included as a a a a restraint?
Restraints include:
