She had her own internal medicine and nephrology practice in Chestertown, Maryland, until 1989, but she missed teaching and felt a calling to give something back to her profession. She joined the staff of the Medical Center of Delaware (now Christiana Care Health System) as the director of the Jefferson Medical College Fourth-Year Medical Student Program and in 1991 became residency program director in Internal Medicine.
In 1994 she was named vice chair of Medicine and served in that role until she became the Hugh R. Sharp Jr. Chair of Medicine in 2006. She later became physician leader of Christiana Care’s Acute Medicine Service Line.
Dr. Collier’s leadership and pursuit of excellence brought regional and national recognition. She served two three-year terms as regent of the 110,000-member American college of physicians (ACP).
From 2000-2004 she served as governor of the Delaware Chapter of the ACP, and in 2009 she received the Delaware Chapter Laureate Award.
In 2013, she became one of only three Masters of the American College of Physicians from the state of Delaware, an honor awarded to highly accomplished individuals distinguished by the excellence and significance of their contributions to the ACP and to the field of medicine.

A 2012 graduate of the Family & Community Residency Program, Dr. Ashkenase’s talents were so highly regarded that she immediately was hired as a faculty member and now serves as the program’s assistant director.
She is consistently ranked as a superior teacher and mentor by residents.
During her residency, Dr. Ashkenase demonstrated excellence in the primary care provider role for patients in Christiana Care’s HIV Community Program and has continued serving that population as a clinical physician embedded in their office.
Under her mentorship, several family medicine residents have followed in her footsteps and are planning to incorporate a similar role into their career paths.
