Connected World – a business and technology magazine that reports on industry trends – has selected ChristianaCare president and CEO Janice Nevin, M.D., MPH, as a 2020 Women of Technology winner.

Dr. Nevin is one of 50 women for the eighth annual list, chosen because they bring a unique lens to their organizations and possess “a remarkable vision for people, digital transformation and innovation.”

During the COVID-19 pandemic, ChristianaCare has leveraged technology in numerous ways to improve patient care, achieving more than 13,000 virtual visits, the monitoring of 6,500 patients and 308,000 secure text messages to patients.

IPads have been deployed to ChristianaCare’s COVID units for use with patients in isolation to reduce their risk of staff exposure and steward the wearing of personal protective equipment. In addition, ChristianaCare was awarded a $714,000 COVID-19 grant from the U.S. Federal Communications Commission to expand telehealth and broadband services for disenfranchised populations as a way to deliver health care services to them.

ChristianaCare also has launched a COVID-19 Employee Virtual Monitoring and Testing program that helps Americans return to work safely by providing daily monitoring of employees for COVID-19 symptoms, as well as testing and care for employees who test positive. This program is made possible through CareVio™, a powerful virtual care platform – developed by ChristianaCare in 2013 – that uses artificial intelligence and machine learning to aggregate data, create a longitudinal patient record, apply predictive analytics, and engage the virtual care team to reach out to patients who are at risk before they are in crisis. The platform also has been a key to ChristianaCare’s success in caring for thousands of patients throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, as it provides asynchronous as well as synchronous care for patients who have tested positive for the virus but may not need hospitalization. CareVio™ has received two of the nation’s most prestigious patient safety awards, the John M. Eisenberg Patient Safety & Quality Award and the National Patient Safety Foundation Award.

In addition, ChristianaCare has:

• Launched a virtual chemotherapy program at ChristianaCare’s Helen F. Graham Cancer Center & Research Institute, which won the prestigious 2018 Magnet Prize by the American Nurses Credentialing Center.
• Created the CritiTrac iOS application, which is designed to reduce variability and better coordinate care delivery and improve data collection during a Code Blue event, when a care team rapidly responds to cardiac arrest. The iPad app received national recognition with a FutureEdge 50 Award from IDG’s CIO.
• An eICU monitoring program that offers stationary and mobile robots that beam intensivists into patient rooms to monitor the sickest patients. The program was one of the first of its kind in the nation.
• A telestroke program that uses video conferencing with physicians and neurologists to diagnose and find the right treatment for stroke.
• Translation services through a video remote interpreting system that enables patients to speak with qualified interpreters.
• Health Records on iPhone, an encrypted and highly secure Apple Health app, which brings together hospitals, outpatient services and the existing Apple Health app to make it easy for patients to see their available medical records from multiple providers.
• The TeleResponse interactive voice response through ChristianaCare HomeHealth, which is ChristianaCare’s home health agency, that enables patients to take their daily health check through a telephone system when it’s most convenient for them. Data are transmitted to caregivers to monitor patient status and reduce hospitalizations and emergency department visits.

Under Dr. Nevin’s leadership, ChristianaCare also has earned a “Most Wired” designation four consecutive times from the College of Healthcare Information Management Executives (CHIME), which recognizes health care organizations that demonstrate the best practices through their adoption, implementation and use of information technology. ChristianaCare also has been recognized with several of the IT industry’s highest awards, including being a four-time awardee of IDG’s CIO 100 award, a three-time awardee of Computerworld’s Laureate Award and multiple recognitions by InformationWeek, including “Most Innovative Organizations,” and “20 Innovative IT Ideas To Steal.” ChristianaCare also has been rated by IDG Computerworld as one of the nation’s Best Places to Work in IT.
