ChristianaCare ranked 78th best hospital in the United States and the only health system in Delaware to make the list

For the fourth year in a row, ChristianaCare has earned a spot in Newsweek’s World’s Best Hospitals, joining other global health care leaders that have remained consistent in providing quality patient care, developing innovative technology and solutions to advance care, and supporting a highly qualified workforce, despite the challenges brought on by a worldwide pandemic.

ChristianaCare, headquartered in Wilmington, Del., ranked 78th in the United States in the annual list of the World’s Best Hospitals by Newsweek and Statista, which ranked 2,200 hospitals in 27 countries.

ChristianaCare was the only health system in Delaware to make the World’s Best Hospitals list.

Newsweek also highlighted ChristianaCare for its superior infection prevention measures.

The lists are based on the following data sources:

• Recommendations from medical experts, which include doctors, hospitals managers and health care professionals. More than 80,000 medical experts were included in the survey.
• A survey on patient-reported outcome measures.
• Publicly available data from existing patient surveys.
• For U.S. hospitals, an infection prevention measurement that credited hospitals performing above the national average for health care associated infections.
• Medical key performance indicators on hospitals, including data on quality of care for specific treatments, data on hygiene measures and patient safety, and data on the number of patients per doctor and per nurse.
• A global board of medical experts that validated the rankings.

The recognition by Newsweek echoes other quality recognitions that ChristianaCare has received during the past 12 months:

• For a second consecutive year, ChristianaCare has earned Healthgrades America’s 50 Best Hospitals Award™ and is among the top 1% of more than 4,500 hospitals assessed nationwide for consistent, year-over-year superior clinical performance.
• Forbes magazine ranked ChristianaCare as one of the best large health systems to work for in the United States for a second consecutive year. ChristianaCare ranked as the 29th best health system overall within Forbes’ list of the 500 best large employers in the United States.
• ChristianaCare’s Medical Intensive Care Unit is the first unit in history to earn a Beacon Award for Excellence from the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses five times in a row. The Beacon Award is one of the highest achievements in nursing.
• For the sixth consecutive year, ChristianaCare has earned the “Most Wired” designation from the College of Healthcare Information Management Executives (CHIME), which assesses how effectively health care organizations apply core and advanced technologies to improve health and care in their communities.
• ChristianaCare has been named a recipient of the American Medical Association’s Joy in Medicine™ Health System Recognition Program. The distinction recognizes health systems that demonstrate a commitment to preserving the well-being of health care team members by engaging in proven efforts to combat work-related stress and burnout. The American Medical Association awarded ChristianaCare a “Gold Recognition,” the highest level within the program. Only 44 health systems nationwide received the Joy in Medicine distinction, with only four other health systems along with ChristianaCare achieving the Gold Recognition.
