ChristianaCare Partners with AblePay to Provide Cost Savings and Improve the Patient Billing Experience

ChristianaCare is making it easy for patients to understand and pay their medical bills through a partnership with AblePay, a free health care consumer program that provides savings, flexible payment options and a convenient way to pay out-of-pocket medical expenses.

Most ChristianaCare patients with primary health insurance, including Medicare, can take advantage of AblePay. AblePay is available for patients to use at any ChristianaCare practice located in Delaware, Pennsylvania and New Jersey. It is not currently available to use at ChrisitianaCare’s Maryland locations.

“At ChristianaCare, we are always looking for new and innovative ways to help improve the overall well-being of the communities we serve, and relieving financial stress can be a big part of that. The unique benefits of the AblePay program – savings, flexibility and assistance – can help deliver peace of mind to our patients,” said Bonnie Graham, senior vice president of Finance at ChristianaCare.

How AblePay helps patients

By partnering to streamline the billing and payment experience, ChristianaCare and AblePay are able to pass on cost savings from increased efficiency to patients.

Once enrolled, it is free for patients to use AblePay’s services. The services can help them:

  • Save up to 13 percent on out-of-pocket medical costs. This includes copays, coinsurance and deductibles.
  • Choose a payment plan that fits their individual financial needs. With AblePay, patients can pay through their checking account, savings account, health savings account, flexible spending account and credit or debit cards.
  • Better understand their medical bills. Billing advocates at AblePay can help answer questions about individual medical bills.

How AblePay works

  • Patients enroll with AblePay online, receive an AblePay ID card and present this card, along with their insurance card, whenever they seek medical treatment from a ChristianaCare provider. While not insurance, AblePay is entered and acts as a secondary payer.
  • The charge will be processed by the primary health insurance first. Patients will still receive an Explanation of Benefits, and the portion that they are responsible for paying will be sent to AblePay electronically from ChristianaCare instead of being sent to the patient. AblePay will pay ChristianaCare on the patient’s behalf.
  • AblePay will then notify patients that they have a new claim on their member portal. Patients will review the bill for accuracy and choose the payment term and method that meets their financial needs. The patients then pay AblePay for what they paid on the patient’s behalf. It’s that easy!
