ChristianaCare, One of America’s 50 Best Hospitals, Further Recognized by Healthgrades as One of America’s Best in Numerous Specialties

ChristianaCare today announced that it has achieved the 2023 America’s 100 Best Hospitals Award™ for five service lines by Healthgrades. ChristianaCare also was named by Healthgrades as one of America’s 50 Best Hospitals for Surgical Care.

In February Healthgrades recognized ChristianaCare as one of America’s 50 Best Hospitals for the second consecutive year (2021-2022).

“Before and throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, our caregivers have continued to provide quality, safe care to our patients,” said Kert Anzilotti, M.D., MBA, chief medical officer at ChristianaCare. “These achievements are the work of a team that represents some of the most talented, dedicated health care professionals in the nation with one focus: being exceptional today and even better tomorrow. Our community can be confident that when they need hospital care, they find the very best at ChristianaCare.”

ChristianaCare’s Christiana Hospital and Wilmington Hospital were recognized by Healthgrades for “outstanding clinical outcomes” in:

  • Cardiac care.
  • Coronary intervention.
  • Joint replacement.
  • Spine surgery.
  • Gastrointestinal surgery.

These distinctions place ChristianaCare in the top 5% of nearly 4,500 hospitals assessed nationwide for cardiac care, coronary intervention, joint replacement, gastrointestinal surgery and surgical care; it places ChristianaCare in the top 10% for spine surgery.

“We commend ChristianaCare for their ongoing commitment to providing high-quality care to patients being treated for cardiac care and undergoing coronary intervention, joint replacement, spine surgery, gastrointestinal surgery and surgical care,” said Brad Bowman, M.D., chief medical officer and head of Data Science at Healthgrades. “Consumers can feel confident that America’s 100 Best Hospitals for cardiac care, coronary intervention, joint replacement, spine surgery, gastrointestinal surgery and America’s 50 Best Hospitals for surgical care have demonstrated their ability to deliver consistently exceptional outcomes.”

ChristianaCare’s Christiana and Wilmington Hospitals are the only hospitals in Delaware to receive:

  • America’s 100 Best Hospitals for Cardiac Care Award™ for 2 years in a row (2022-2023).
  • America’s 100 Best Hospitals for Coronary Intervention Award™ in 2023.
  • America’s 100 Best Hospitals for Gastrointestinal Surgery Award™ for 12 years in a row (2012-2023).
  • America’s 100 Best Hospitals for Spine Surgery Award™ for 10 years in a row (2014-2023).
  • America’s 100 Best Hospitals for Joint Replacement Award™ for 8 years in a row (2016-2023).
  • America’s 50 Best Hospitals for Surgical Care for 2 years in a row (2022-2023).

Healthgrades evaluated patient mortality and complication rates for 31 of the most common conditions and procedures at hospitals across the country to identify the top-performing hospitals for specialty care. This year’s analysis revealed significant variation in patient outcomes between America’s 100 Best Hospitals/America’s 50 Best Hospitals, like ChristianaCare, for the five service lines when compared to hospitals that did not receive these distinctions.

Union Hospital in Maryland, which joined ChristianaCare in 2020 and is rated by Healthgrades independently of ChristianaCare’s Delaware hospitals, has not yet achieved Healthgrades’ America’s 100 Best Specialty Excellence Awards, but it earned five-star clinical achievement ratings for:

  • Treatment of Heart Failure for 2 years in a row (2022-2023).
  • Treatment of Sepsis for 10 years in a row (2014-2023).
  • Treatment of Respiratory Failure for 14 years in a row (2010-2023).
  • C-Section Delivery for 5 years in a row (2018-2022).

“I am incredibly proud of the work that our caregivers at Union Hospital are doing in advancing quality and safety,” Dr. Anzilotti said. “They are delivering outstanding care today, and at the same time they are putting the pieces in place to be truly exceptional tomorrow.”

From 2019-2021, patients treated at hospitals receiving the America’s 100 Best Hospitals for Joint Replacement Award have, on average, a 65.6% lower risk of experiencing a complication while in the hospital than if they were treated in hospitals that did not receive the award.*
