Laura Lawler, M.D., FAAP — Chief, Pediatric Hospitalists

Laura Lawler, M.D., is deeply committed to Delaware and its children. Dr. Lawler was born and grew up in Wilmington, Delaware, where she was raised by a family with three generations of teachers. So in a way, caring for our community’s children runs in her family. But with a strong love of science, Dr. Lawler knew her career would bring her to care for children in a different way than the other women in her family.

Dr. Lawler has spent her entire medical training and career with ties to Delaware. Having graduated University of Delaware magna cum laude, she then completed her medical school training at Jefferson Medical College. Since Delaware does not have its own medical school, Jefferson Medical College’s close ties with Delaware and Christiana Care are very important. Dr. Lawler then completed her residency at A.I. du Pont Hospital for Children, where she learned the critical skills and knowledge needed by a pediatrician.

Dr. Lawler is now chief of the Pediatric Hospitalists at Christiana Care Health System, a practice of general pediatricians that takes care of children requiring hospitalization at Christiana Hospital. She has a special interest in patient safety, serving on numerous safety committees at Christiana Care. Dr. Lawler also has a special interest in care of newborns, and enjoys taking care of new families and newborn babies in the Christiana Hospital Delivery Room and Nursery. With over 6000 deliveries per year at Christiana Care, caring for newborn babies is an important part of her work as a hospitalist. Dr. Lawler also takes care of children on the Pediatric Inpatient Unit at Christiana, where she cares for families when children are sick, and helps them on their path to recovery.

Dr. Lawler still lives in Wilmington today, where she enjoys traveling, music and spending time with her husband, family and dog.
