Erin Kavanaugh Named Interim Chair, Department of Family and Community Medicine
Erin Kavanaugh, M.D., FAAFP, has been named interim chair of the ChristianaCare Department of Family and Community Medicine. As interim chair, Dr. Kavanaugh will be responsible for fostering and maintaining a vibrant, successful family and community medicine department, including physician performance, quality, research and scholarly activity as well as the administration of all departmental educational, clinical and academic programming.
Dr. Kavanaugh was hired as clinical faculty for the ChristianaCare Family Medicine Residency program in 2010 and soon was named assistant program director and then associate program director. She has participated in a variety of leadership development programs here at ChristianaCare, including the Advanced Quality and Safety Improvement Science Program in 2014, as well as Just Culture training and Diamond Leadership in 2019. She has also held leadership roles in the Department of Medicine as Unit Based Medical Director of 6S/Stepdown at Wilmington hospital from 2012 to 2017.
In April 2016, Dr. Kavanaugh was named the residency program director for family medicine and co-program director for emergency medicine/family medicine. In January 2019, Dr. Kavanaugh was appointed vice chair of the Department of Family and Community Medicine. Dr. Kavanaugh is a clinical associate professor of family and community medicine at Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University. She is a fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians, past president of the Delaware Academy of Family Physicians and actively serves as the treasurer of the board. She has received a variety of system, state and regional awards for her commitment to excellence in education.
Dr. Kavanaugh completed her medical education at the Jefferson Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University in 2007. She completed her family medicine residency at ChristianaCare’s family medicine residency program in 2010, where she served as chief resident. Dr. Kavanaugh is a practicing family physician, Delaware native and DIMER program graduate. She sees her patients at the Family Medicine Center at Wilmington Primary Care located in Wilmington Hospital.
